According to a city police spokesman, the practice is common in the region due to the distance of the cellular towers and radio stations that interfere with the signal quality of mobile phones.

Witnesses said that Elizabeth was holding the phone in her hand, while her husband tried to improve the signal by connecting it to the TV antenna. As Diego struggled to control the antenna, one of the antenna rods hit a high voltage electrical wire.

Diego died instantly. His wife, who was holding the phone connected to the antenna cable, was also shocked and died a few minutes later. Police have ruled their deaths an accident.
