Scores Injured in late afternoon accident

RIO DE JANEIRO - At about 6 pm Saturday night local time, in the beautiful Santa Teresa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, the iconic tram that climbs up the mountain from Lapa, known locally as the bonde, derailed and slid backwards for over 50 meters killing five and injuring at least thirty, reported Folha de São Paulo.

Among the dead on the train, recognized around the world as a symbol of the city, was the conductor, Nelson Correa da Silva, 57. He stayed at the controls as the train slid down the hill and he died on the way to the hospital.

The trolly was completely destroyed according to an expert who arrived on the scene after the accident.

In June of this year, a Frenchman Damien Charles Pierson, 24, died after falling from the trolley, atop the Arcos da Lapa in downtown Rio.

Pierson was standing on the running board of the car when he lost his balance and fell to his death. The young man, whose belongings were stolen after he fell, died at the scene.
