Vessels to Transport Children Living Along the Amazon River to School
MANAUS, Brazil – Forty new boats to be used for transporting students to and from public school are expected to be delivered on Thursday. The boats, which hold up to 20 people each, will serve students and schools along the capitol's waterfront up and down the Amazon and Negro Rivers, reported PortalAmazonia.com.
According to the City Department of Education, the vessels were built by the naval shipyard in Natal and will be delivered ready for navigation. The boats are equipped with ecologically sensitive outboard engines, life jackets,buoys and fire extinguishers for safety.
The donated boats are part of the “Way to School” program, a partnership between the Brazilian Ministry of Education and the Navy. The objective is to combat truancy in rural communities.
Manaus is the capital of the state of Amazonas. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. The city was founded in 1669 and was once considered to be the richest city in the world. It is the largest metropolitan area in northern Brazil and the 12th largest in the country.
