Commuter Rail Coaches for SuperVia in Rio de Janeiro
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – The first of 34 new railroad passenger coaches ordered by the government of Rio de Janeiro for the SuperVia commuter railway have been shipped from the Chinese port of Dalian and are expected to arrive by September 20th. The new coaches were manufactured by the China National Machinery group for a total of $263 million U.S., reported terra.com.
The new coaches, originally expected to begin arriving at the Port of Rio de Janeiro by September 10th but delayed by a hurricane in the South China Sea, are more spacious and comfortable than the existing coaches. They are equipped with LED panels, CCTV, air-conditioning and, at the request of frequent passengers, more baggage room. Each train can carry upto 1,300 passengers and they are equipped with modern locomotion and braking technologies.
The state government hopes to replace the entire fleet of SuperVia trains, which date to the late 1990s, in time for the 2016 Olympics. Later this year, the government will begin the bidding process for 60 new trains.
According to wikipedia, the SuperVia commuter rail system was created in Rio de Janeiro in 1998. It carries 126 million passengers per year on a network of 89 stations serving 11 cities.
