Architect Shot Dead During Ipanema Robbery Attempt

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Architect Rômulo Castro Tavares was killed by a single gunshot to the abdomen during a robbery attempt in Ipanema Saturday morning, reports O Globo.

Rômulo was approached by two men as he arrived at the building where he lived at 680 Rua Prudente de Moraes. As he waited in his Hyundai Tucson for the garage entrance gate to open, two robbers arrived on a motorcycle and stopped in front of the building where one of the men, armed with a handgun, got off and approched the drivers door of the Tucson, according to the doorman, Joelson Duarte.

The doorman went on to say that the robber pointed his gun through the driver's side window which was opened a few inches. Rather than surrender to the robbers the victim opened his door to fight back. After a brief struggle the victim was shot taking a single bullet to the abdomen. The robbers fled empty handed.

Doctors passing by were able to revive him until the arrival of an ambulance from the Fire Department. He was taken to the Hospital Miguel Couto but died a short time later. According to neighbors, Rômulo lived alone and had family in Bahia.
