BAC Nearly Four Times Legal Limit

VITORIA, Brazil – A drunken driver crossed over the raised median on the busy Avenida Dante Micheline, on the edge of Camburi Beach, around 4 pm on Friday. A breathalyzer analysis revealed that the businesswoman, Valeria Regina Germano Brezinski, 47, had a blood alcohol level nearly four times higher than allowed by law, reported O Globo Online.

“When her car went up onto the median it came to a stop. Other drivers who were close behind stopped to provide assistance. When they asked her if she were sick, she nodded yes, put on her sunglasses and went to sleep,” said Adriadne Rodrigues, who was passing-by and witnessed the ordeal.

The scene turned into a popular attraction during the 30 minutes it took the police to arrive.

“When we arrived on the scene, we pulled up alongside the woman's vehicle, and we removed her,” said the policeman Vasconcelos. “She refused to answer some of our questions we needed for our report, but she did perform the breathalyzer test which showed she was drunk.”

She told police that she had been drinking with a friend in Canto Beach and was heading home to Camburi Gardens, when she lost control of the vehicle, a Honda Fit.

“A friend and I met in a bar, in Canto Beach,” she said. “We only had one drink—not enough to make me drunk. One drink—then my friend left and I headed for home.”

The test result showed a blood alcohol content of 1.2. The maximum allowed is .30. The police charged Valeria with drunken driving under the National Traffic Code. Valeria faces a fine of about U.S. $500. Police took the woman to the Judicial Police Department in Vitoria where they charged her and assessed bail equivalent to U.S. $550.
