Among the films banned by the censorship committee of the local communist party are the documentaries “A Night in 67,” “Dzi Croquettes” and “Red Light Bandit.” The committee did not give a reason for the veto.

The festival's curator, Ana Maria Bochi, who has been living in China for three years, suspected that some of the documentaries would be prohibited on account of the political contexts (two of the films had the Brazilian dictatorship as a backdrop), but she didn't want to engage in self censorship by withholding the films.

”I wanted to risk it. In addition I chose to live there and have to comply with the government however much I disagree,” she ponders.

Among the nine films considered harmless to the Chinese population are three animations for children. The Chinese Government tolerates sex in cinema. “Malu de Bicicleta,” was approved, to the surprise of Ana Maria who said that it contain sex scenes.

In addition to the nine censored movies, “Linha de Passe,” would have to be edited to be shown, although, the committee didn't say what would have to be cut.
