Hitman Helps Target Fake Her Death

Killer-For-Hire and Intended Victim Were Long-Time Friends

PINDOBACU, Bahia – A woman, and the hitman hired to kill her, may now face larceny charges for conspiring to fake her own death. According to a police investigation, Iranildes Aguilar de Araujo, known as Lupita, received the equivalent of U.S. $127 from the would-be killer for staging photographs depicting her own death.

In this small Bahian town, some 300 km from the state capital, Salvador, people do not like to talk about the case. In the streets, shops and squares, residents shied away from retelling the story that has turned into a joke. Residents now refer to Lupita as the Ketchup Wife.

Under interrogation, Lupita told the investigator Marconi Lima, that she tore her own blouse and put a machete into her armpit. Carlos Roberto Alves Junior tied her up, gagged her and pored ketchup over her, making it look as if Roberto had slashed and stabbed her death.

“When Maria Nilza sent Roberto to kill Lupita he told her that he would not kill her because they knew each other for so long,” said Investigator Lima.

On July 24th, Lupita and Roberto went to a supermarket in town and bought two bottles of ketchup. From there, they went to a thicket. Lupita prepared the scene by tearing her blouse, laying on the ground and placing a machete in her armpit. Alves then pored the ketchup on her making it appear as if her had killed her. Alves then took a picture of the supposedly dead victim to show to the client.

Upon seeing the picture, Maria Nilza, paid the equivalent of U.S. $530 to Alves for his services. Days later, Maria saw Lupita alive at a dance hall in the village and realized that Roberto swindled her. She reported the incident to police who opened an investigation.

According to Lima, this week, all three testified, and each told the truth. Lupita stole Maria's husband, and in revenge, Maria hired Alves to kill her rival.

Investigators set the two women free after hearing their testimony. Since Maria paid Roberto and he did not perform the service for which Maria contracted, prosecutors arrested the man. They charged him with larceny for misappropriation of funds.
