Netizens Organize Symbolic Embrace of Lake

Brazilians Reach Out to Save Urban Lake

VIAMAO, Brazil – Residents of this city of almost 300,000, located in the Metropolitan Porto Alegre region, are mobilizing through the social networking site Facebook, to give a symbolic embrace of Taruma Lake, on September 14th at 2 pm. The date of the embrace was chosen specifically as it is the 270th anniversary of the founding of the city, reports terra.com.br.

Concerned about the abandonment of the site, Felipe Peixoto, one of the organizers of the event, started the online campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of the lake.

According to Peixoto, the area is dimly lit and cluttered. “Ten years ago the Turuma served as a meeting place in the neighborhood. Currently, the site is abandoned. The people disrespected the environment and destroyed one of the postcards of the city.” he said.

On the event page on Facebook, more than 600 people have confirmed their presence. According to Peixoto, who is apolitical, the initiative aims to bring awareness to the condition of the lake and to help save it.

The City of Viamao has set aside August 26th, under the supervision of the Secretary for Economic development and Transportation Works, a thorough cleaning of the lake shore and a sampling of the waters for clinical analysis. According to the secretary, they aim to discover the cause of large fish die offs in recent years.

The Municipal Planning, Housing and Environment (SEPLAN) has already approved a revitalization plan for the area.
