Retiree Dies Entering Home Through Roof

| RECIFE, Brazil – A man died of suffocation while trying to enter his house through the roof, Friday afternoon, in the Macaxeira neighborhood of Recife, Pernambuco, reports O Globo online.

On arriving home, the man, Joao Batista de Paula Pessoa, 53, who didn't have house keys on him, pulled off a number roof tiles and tried to slip into his attic through the wooden slats where he became stuck. Authorities say the spaces between the slats were too narrow where he tried to enter. He made it in up to his chest before becoming immobilized and suffocating to death over a period of several hours.

Neighbors said that this was not the first time that Joao Batista had tried to enter his house, located on Canal Street, in this manner. A heavy drinker, he sometimes forgot his keys and, not wanting to brake a glass window, he would burrow through the roof to get in to the house.

The rescue squad from the local Fire Department had to saw through the slats of wood and remove the body with a rope connected to a latter truck. According to neighbors, the victim lived alone, was separated and had three sons and two grandchildren.

Recife is the fourth largest metropolitan area in Brazil and, with a population of 4.2 million, the largest in the country's north-eastern region. The city is the capitol of the state of Pernambuco. Recife is also a major port city, located where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River to flow into the Atlantic Ocean.
