Besides the latest victim, five people have died and 56 were injured in the accident on the world famous Santa Teresa Trolley, or Bonde, as it is known locally. The accident occurred last August 27th when the tram slid backwards down Joaquim Murtinho street towards the Arcos da Lapa when it derailed and hit a retaining wall sheering the coach off of its chassis.

Several organizations, state, federal and private are investigating the accident. The preliminary findings point towards brake failure and poor maintenance of the 115-year-old trolley which was last restored in the 1980s.

Alcides was admitted to Emergency at Hospital Badim on August 28th, at 1:44 am, presenting with head injury and hemorrhagic lesions caused by concussion. Since that time, she remained in ICU. Her condition remained grave as her symptoms worsened with neurological and pulmonary complications.
