| RIO DE JANEIRO – The first of 34 Chinese-made trains that the state government ordered for the SuperVia commuter rail arrived at the Port of Rio de Janeiro Tuesday. Officials expect to unload all 34 trains by tonight.
The State of Rio de Janeiro owned SuperVia commuter rail line ordered the coaches from Changchun Railway Vehicles, Changchun, China for U.S. 188 million. Changchun is the same company manufacturing 19 trains for the Rio Metro.
The contract mandates that all 34 trains be delivered by June next year. SuperVia officials will test the trains that arrived Tuesday, before putting them in to service carrying passengers. Officials with the Rio state government will begin testing the trains within the next 20 days.
Changchun will ship the new trains in batches of three or four at a time, once per month. Each train will accommodate up to 1,300 passengers. The cars include the latest operational technologies for switching and braking. The purchase agreement provides three years warranty and service, including maintenance and parts replacement.
Passengers will enjoy coaches outfitted with air-conditioning, padded seats, luggage racks and LCD TVs. Each coach has 54 seats with 8 reserved for the elderly, pregnant women and the disabled. Each car has four TVs that will display news and institutional campaigns.
Each car comes equipped with six racks for backpacks, bags and other objects. Advanced electronics will provide travelers with ambient sound and temperature maintained at 73 degrees (23° c.). The surveillance system includes integrated CCTV cameras which will provide a 360 degree view of the entire interior of each car.
