18,000 Now Evacuated in Severe Flooding

BLUMENAU, Brazil – Civil Defense Authorities in Santa Catarina have extended the State of Emergency, declared on Thursday, to 10 municipalities in the southern state, reports O Globo online.

The Civil Defense Department in the state capital, Florianopolis, report that the severe flooding has affected 440,000 people in 46 municipalities. 17,722 have been evacuated and 984 homes have been lost.

No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported in the flooding.

Blumenau is set to hold the world's second largest Oktoberfest, after Munich Germany, next month starting on the 6th. The first annual Blumenau Oktoberfest was in 1984—the municipality's response to brutal flooding that year.
