Update: Highway of Immigrants Reopens

SP-150 Reopens Friday After Thursdays Mega-Pileup

SAO PAULO, Brazil - Authorities reopened northbound lanes of Immigrants highway SP-150 after Thursday's mega-crash. On the advice of the toll-road operator, Ecovias, police released traffic onto the roadway at 11:30 am Friday. The highway was closed since 12:50 pm on Thursday when 270 vehicles became involved in a pileup, apparently because of poor visibility due to heavy fog.

With dense fog again today and visibility limited to less than 100 yards in some areas, Military Police are escorting motorists in groups of 500 vehicles every 30 minutes. Traffic today jammed at the toll plazas and at the 31 and 32 km markers in the area where yesterdays accident occurred.

In the end, there were fewer fatalities than authorities feared as the situation unfolded yesterday. There was one fatality and 51 wounded, according to Colonel Roverval Franca, commander of the PM in the area. Only 104 owners, out of the 270 involved, made a police report so far.

After yesterday's accident, police rerouted traffic into the capitol to the Anchieta highway. Traffic jammed the highway this morning, moving at between 10 and 20 kilometers per hour.
