Woman Set Ablaze by Ex-Husband

Suffers Second Degree Burns After Quarrel with Ex

BELO HORIZONTE, Minas Gerais – A woman suffered burns over 50% of her body after her ex-husband set her ablaze following a quarrel on Sunday night, in Ituana.

According to the Military Police (PM) in this central-western city of 85,000 near the state capitol, Belo Horizonte, Fernanda Ferreira dos Santos, 30, was attacked as she slept. Neighbors reported that the woman's ex-husband, Carlos Alberto Guimaraes, 45, had argued with the victim shortly before the crime.

Neighbors said that Guimaraes went into the house, sprayed the sleeping woman with a flammable liquid, set her ablaze and then fled. The witnesses were alerted by the woman screaming in pain. They went outside to investigate when they saw the suspect fleeing the scene. They called police and rendered aid to the victim.

Fernanda was taken to a city hospital, where it was determined that she suffered second degree burns on half her body. The woman was transferred to Hospital Joao XXIII, in Belo Horizonte, which has a burn unit. Police are still searching for Guimaraes, who remains a fugitive.

It was not clear what the couple had been arguing about.
