According to police, the Municipal Guard in Botofogo, on the south side of the city, approached the young man for driving with his automobile sound system playing too loudly. When contacted by officers, he refused to comply with their lawful orders, claiming that he was the “son of a colonel.”

The young man was not able to provide a drivers license, so police took him into custody.

At the police station, in Copacabana, he tried to escape by climbing out a window. Police were waiting for Soares outside the window where they took him back into custody. Police said that, in addition to not having ID, Soares showed signs of drunkenness.
