One of the Victims Died This Morning in Hospital

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – A driver leaving a religious festival on Sunday night ran down 21 people in Bom Jardim das Pedras, a small town 125 km from the state capital of Minas Gerais. One of the victims died this morning in hospital, according to the Military Police (PM). The PM alleges that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Witnesses say the car, a Fiat Palio, was speeding and overturned. Some people who witnessed the tragedy attacked the driver of the car, who was arrested. The injured were taken to various hospitals in the region. The driver was taken to the police station where he was treated for injuries sustained in the mob attack and later taken to jail.

Six victims were transferred to the Trauma Center at John XXIII Hospital in the state capital. One victim, a 42-year-old man, died of head trauma early Monday morning. An 11-year-old child and a 79-year-old man were admitted in critical condition. The two were still in the operating room at press time.
