BELEM, Brazil – Federal Tax Authorities are looking for the owner of almost one million U.S. dollars, plus smaller amounts of other foreign currencies, abandoned by its owner on a cargo plane flying from Sao Paulo to Belem, Para, in April. If the owner is not located by November, the money will be forfeited.

Almost a Million U.S. Dollars abandoned in Belem

The money was found in a pouch belonging to an unnamed stockbroker who got off the cargo plane at the International Airport in Belem. The flight originated at the Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo on Wednesday, April 13th. Authorities say the cash was not declared on the required GTV form.

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) investigated the case but was not able to identify those responsible for the shipment. The cash was impounded and held in the custody of the Central Bank of Brazil in Belem. Movement of large amounts of currency without filing the GTV form is a considered a crime against the national economy and is assumed to be the result of money laundering.

The article does not make clear if the authorities intend to return the cash to the owner, if he is identified, or arrest him for financial crimes.
