Bars and nightclubs closed; arrests include German Tourists
FORTALEZA, Brazil – A major anti-prostitution operation, aimed at underage girls, conducted by 260 agents from multiple police agencies, during the predawn hours Sunday, closed bars and nightclubs; arrested bar owners and managers, prostitutes and a handful of German tourists.
According to the police, 46 underage prostitutes were picked up, 200 grams of cocaine was seized, four illegal aliens were arrested and six vehicles were impounded. The operation was aimed at removing underage prostitutes from the streets.
The task force was formed by military, civil and federal police, the Fire Department and the Childhood and Youth Court. The targets of the operation were underage prostitutes, “abusive” nightclubs, bars and restaurants along the Iracema Beach District, in the Noble area of Fortaleza.
According to the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense (SSPDS), 260 officers participated in the operation. The officers blitzed the Almirante Barroso Avenue, Cariris Street, Tabajaras Street and Historian Ahmed Guarino Street.
In addition to the closure of establishments, criminal charges were brought against German Tourists for assaulting police officers.
Establishments were also cited for violations of health and safety codes. Tables, chairs and umbrellas on sidewalks in front of establishments were seized.
According to the SSPDS, raids like the one this morning will be carried out on a more frequent basis in the Iracema Beach area, where the largest numbers of tourists and prostitutes gather in Fortaleza.
