Paraguayan Busted with Ton of Pot

| CURITIBA, Brazil – Special Federal Maritime Police (DEPOM) seized about 1 metric ton of marijuana Monday night in the Itaipulândia area of Foz do Iguaçu in the state of Paraná. Maritime officers, on patrol on Lake Itaipu, spotted a suspicious boat apparently crossing from Paraguay with no running lights and decided to investigate.

Special Maritime Police with Boat Seized From Paraguayan Containing Over One Metric Ton of Marijuana

The boat's pilot, a 25-year-old Paraguayan, was apprehended. He stated that the drugs were loaded near the area known as Porto Verde, Paraguay, and would be unloaded on the Brazilian side. The man was to get about U.S. $300 for crossing the lake with the contraband.

The boat and the drugs were transferred to the Federal Police (PF) in Foz do Iguaçu for inspection and eventual incineration. The Paraguayan was charged with international drug trafficking which is punishable by up to 15 years imprisonment in Brazil.
