Expected to draw 300,000 visitors per year
CURITIBA, Parana – The city of Paranagua expects to inaugurate the new U.S. $3 million Aquário Marinho de Paranaguá, which is nearing completion, in February of 2012. Originally scheduled for opening in July of this year, delays in construction necessitated pushing back the opening date of the 24,000 square foot facility until February.

The city of Paranagua donated the 2 acre site, located in the Ferradura neighborhood near the center of the old city. The project is a collaboration between the city, the state environmental agency and the company Cattalini Marine Terminals, whose participation is in remediation for environmental damage caused by the explosion of the Chilean-flagged ship Vicuna in 2004.
The aquarium will have three floors with an oceanarium, aquarium, library, gift shop, cafeteria, auditorium, gazebo, interactive educational exhibits and a garden for special events. The facility is expected to attract over 300,000 visitors per year.
The city of Paranagua and the Parana State Department of the Environment will jointly administer the attraction. Cattalini Marine Terminals was found to have had no responsibility for the explosion of the Vicuna, which killed four and caused major environmental damage along the Parana coast in 2004.
