Car is zero-emission and silent
CURITIBA, Parana – A group of electrical and mechanical engineering students from the Federal Technological University of Parana (UTFPR) in Cornelio Procopio, converted an aging VW Beetle into an electrical car.
The Beetle, which is powered by electricity, was quite an attraction during National Science Week on the upstate campus. Thirty years ago, an electrical engineer from the university developed a prototype of the project which just came to fruition this year through the effort of students and funding from a group of London businessmen.
The car is totally clean and does not emit any pollution, including noise. The investment was equivalent to about U.S.$14,000. It can travel at about 37 miles per hour at a cost per mile about ¼ the cost of gasoline power.
“Brazil is rich in sources and renewable energy. I believe that in at most five years from now the electric car will be a reality in Brazil,” said student Diego Rodrigues.
