Brazil Expects Half World Meat Production

Brazil News

| BRASILIA – Rapid growth of world population, which recently exceeded 7 billion, creates the need to double food production by 2050, when world population is expected to reach 9 billion. Combining this phenomenon with higher urbanization and higher incomes in developing countries creates an even greater challenge in the production of meat and opens up a great business opportunity for Brazil.

Brazil expects to produce 45% of beaf and 50% of poultry worldwide by 2020

According to estimates from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), to accommodate the accelerated growth of meat consumption in countries like China, India and Brazil, the world will have to increase the overall supply of meats from the current 228 million to 463 million tons annually by 2050. In this process of increasing meat supply, the number of cattle will increase from 1.5 billion to 2.6 billion head.

Brazil is already the largest producer of beef and has been since 2008, when it surpassed U.S. $14 billion in the export of animal protein. Projections by the Ministry of Agriculture indicate that the country should increase current share of 20.7% worldwide market share to 44.5% by 2020, when Brazil also expects to dominate the poultry trade with 50% overall production.

Demography creates a strong future demand for products where competition is high in Brazil, but the government itself sees obstacles for the country to make the most of this opportunity. On a visit last month to Congress, the president of the Brazilian Investment Bank (BNDES), Luciano Coutinho, proposed and integrated strategy to support livestock.

He said that current refrigeration capacity will not support increased supply of animal protein to supply external demand. “We need to foster the agricultural livestock industry so that it will be able to increase productivity. This calls for expansion of service matrices, recovery of pastureland and a program of phytosanitary inspections.”
