Expired food found on premisses by police after anonymous tip

The chef, and a nutritionist who was also arrested at the luxury hotel, were taken to a detention facility in downtown Sao Paulo and were released early this evening after bail was posted in the amount of five minimum wages, or about U.S. $1,600.

Police said that the products were located after an anonymous tip received early Monday morning.

According to police chief Paulo Alberto Mendes Pereira, Precinct 2 of the Public Health Police, the expired food was in a receiving area where it is normally stored before being moved to the quality control area of the hotel. “But under the law, the food would have to be in a separate area and clearly marked, to prevent its use, even if unintentionally,” he said.

In a statement, the Grand Hyatt Sao Paulo stated that “the welfare, health and safety of its guests and staff are a priority. We follow the strictest food safety procedures required by the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency, with daily procedures and periodic laboratory testing.”

Also according to the statement, the hotel is “investigating the incident” and taking immediate steps to correct any problems. Likewise, we collaborate with the work of the health authorities as necessary.”
