CAMPO GRANDE, Mato Grosso do Sul – Giordana Mazzurana, 8, from the southern Brazilian state of Parana, was elected Miss Brazil Child, in a competition held last weekend in Campo Grande. In an interview with G1 MS, Giordana said she was surprised by the victory. “I had no idea that I would be chosen, but I had hope because I prepared well for the contest. I was thrilled when I saw the result,” she said.

The little blond girl, who was born in Cascavel but now lives in Maringa, represented her home state, Parana. She competed with 13 other candidates, between the ages of eight and twelve, representing the states of Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Para, Paraiba, Piaui, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondonia, Santa Catarina and Sao Paulo.

The girl's mother, Marilda Mazzurana, told G1 that her daughter has done modeling work for catalogs and fashion shows as well as advertisements on TV, but it was the first time she had participated in a beauty contest. “Her dream was always to be famous and appear in magazines, so when we learned of the contest, she asked me to sign her up,” continued the mom.

Besides the gold-plated crown, Giordana won a trip to Disney World with a companion, a set of unique jewelery from the contest, R$5,000 reals (about $2,700 USD) cash, 15 party dresses and a set of books for children. Next, she will represent Brazil in the international phase of the contest to be held in 2012.

The coordinator of the contest, Allan Schistl, said that the event exceeded expectations. “It was a good choice to have the final of the competition in Mato Grosso do Sul. Generally, beauty pageants are held in the cities of the south, in Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. Bringing the event here was a new idea and it worked,” the coordinator told G1 MS.
