The drugs were found during a routine screening at Pinto Martins International Airport in Fortaleza as the girls were about to embark for Lisbon, Portugal's capital. The drugs were seized and the women taken to jail. The two were charged with international drug trafficking, and if convicted, face 5 to 15 years imprisonment.

Just over the last week, the PF at the airport seized over 194 kg (428 lbs) of cocaine. This year, Pinto Martins was the Brazilian airport with the second largest amount of cocaine seizures. Young people from Europe are increasingly being arrested in Brazil in the act of smuggling drugs.
