Police Seize Half Million in Cash

Brazil News

| SAO PAULO – Police on Monday seized almost a half million in cash found in false compartments in the cab of a truck in Barretos, in the interior of the state. Police arrested the driver on the spot and later were able to identify and detain the man who was to receive the cash.

Authorities said that the money came from drug trafficking and was to be used to purchase more drugs. The truck was traveling along the highway Brigadeiro Faria Lima, in Barretos, when it was stopped at a checkpoint for a routine inspection. It was then that police found the R$464,000 reals ($251,000 USD) in cash hidden in the cab of the truck.

The vehicle was carrying a cargo of motorcycle parts bound for Belem, in the north-eastern state of Para. According to the police spokesman, all of the documents related to the truck and its shipment were in order—an an obvious attempt at misleading the police, he said.

Under interrogation, the driver confessed that he was transporting about 30 kilos of pure cocaine per week to Sao Paulo and when he returned to Para, he had to pay for the drugs. The man to whom the cash was to be delivered was arrested in 2009 for the same crime but was released on bail pending the outcome of the case.

The two will be charged with money laundering and trafficking.
