Dilma Rousseff Being Interrogated

| RIO DE JANEIRO – The Brazilian magazine Epoca this week published a previously unseen image of the future president being interrogated at the Military Court of Rio. The black and white photo, taken in November 1970, shows a 22-year-old Dilma Rousseff being questioned about her participation in the armed struggle against the military dictatorship.

Youth Caught With 393 Kg Marijuana

| CAMPO GRANDE, Mato Grosso do Sul – An 18-year-old man was arrested Thursday carrying 393 kg (867 lbs) of marijuana in Amambai, 342 km (213 miles) from the capital. Federal Police (PF) made the arrest late last night as part of Operation Sentinel, which fights crime along Brazil's international borders.

Englishman Busted with Cocaine

| SAO PAULO – An Englishman was arrested on Thursday afternoon at Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo trying to board a flight with cocaine hidden in his digestive tract. Federal Police (PF) detained the man in the departure lounge as he was waiting to board a flight to Rio de Janeiro.

Dilma Runs Interference for Hugo

| CARACAS – On Friday, in a show of solidarity with Hugo Chavez, President Rousseff defended Venezuelan partnership in the construction of a major refinery in Pernambuco. In her first official visit to Venezuela, Dilma was received by a Venezuelan leader ailing from cancer treatments in Cuba, and who has been unable to raise the bank loans necessary for his country's participation in the Abreu e Lima refinery project in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco.

Arrested Carrying 34 lbs Pure Cocaine

| FORTALEZA, Brazil - The Federal Police of Ceará arrested a man on Monday afternoon with 15.5 kilos (about 34 lbs) of pure cocaine at the Pinto Martins International Airport in Fortaleza. According to the Federal Police, the suitcases had strong smell of camphor, often used to disguise the smell of drugs in order to evade detection by drug-sniffing police dogs.

Ferryboat Slams into Pier in Rio

| RIO DE JANEIRO – The ferryboat Gavea I, carrying 907 passengers across Guanabara Bay from Niteroi slammed into a pier near the passenger terminal in Rio de Janeiro early Monday afternoon. A spokesman for the company that runs the passenger line said that about 25 people were wounded in the accident.

Disc Jockey Dies on Air

| SAO PAULO – A disc jockey died on-air Monday morning during his daily show on Educadora FM Iacanga, in the interior of the state, 392 km (244 miles) from the capital. Jeltro Pereira Barbosa, 68, known as Delporã on the radio, had a history of heart problems and had survived triple bypass surgery.

Rehabilitated Seal to Return to Sea

| SAO PAULO – A baby fur seal that was found six months ago on a beach in Peruibe, on the southern coast of the state, will be returned to sea on Monday. Worn down from an infection, she underwent rehabilitation at the Municipal Aquarium of Santos. Marine biologists believe that the pup, after becoming sick and weak, was separated from her pod and dragged ashore by currents.

At 279 feet tall, weighing 542 tons, and decorated with 3.3 million light-bulbs, the tree is one of the city's main seasonal tourist attractions.
