Drink Beer in Blumenau at Sommerfest

Brazil News

| FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil – To welcome the hottest season of the year, the city of Blumenau on Thursday, kicked off the sort of mini-Oktoberfest party called Sommerfest. Blumenau, in the Valley of Itajai, is most famous for its annual Oktoberfest – the second largest in the world – behind only Munich, Germany.

Sommerfest isn't all that different. It offers food, fun, dancing and beer, lots of beer. The food is in the style of summer food from Germany. The beer comes in all varieties – unusual for Brazil – and “stupidly cold,” as they say here. Various regional musical groups will provide entertainment for dancing, and of course, like all good festivals, there will be a parade.

Unlike the Oktoberfest celebration which goes on every day, Sommerfest is a bit more modest, opening only on Thursday nights from January 5th until February 9th. Like its municipal cousin, the party takes place in German Park in the center of the city.

Admission is just R$6 ($4 USD) and R$3 ($2 USD) for students and seniors over 60 years old. Organizers expect about 30 thousand people to attend. For more information, you can visit the Sommerfest official website.
