| RIO DE JANEIRO – Singer-songwriter Pery Ribeiro, 74, died early Friday in Rio de Janeiro after suffering a heart attack. He was the son of singer Dalva de Oliveira (1917-1972) and singer-songwriter Herivelto Martins (1912-1992).

According to Pery's wife, businesswoman Ana Duarte, he was admitted to Pedro Ernesto University Hospital for treatment of endocarditis. “This morning [Friday] we were surprised by this massive heart attck,” mourned Ana, who was married to the artist for 20 years. Pery leaves two children: Paula, from his first marriage, and Bernardo – a producer of TV commercials.
Pery Ribeiro's Career
Pery began his artistic career at age three, when did the voice of the dwarf Bashful in the animated Walt Disney film Snow White, alongside his mother, who did the voice of the main character. At aged five, in 1942, he participated in “It's All True,” the unfinished film by Orson Welles, which was filmed in Brazil.
His radio debut came in 1959, on Paulo Gracindo's show at Radio Nacional, where he took the stage name Pery Ribeiro on the suggestion of his godfather Cesar Alencar. In 1960, his recording career took off with the recording of a series of Bossa Nova hits, including “Nao Devo Insistir,” “Manha de Carnaval,” and “Barquinho.”
Pery was the first to commercially record the international hit “Garota de Ipanema,” better known to English speakers as “The Girl From Ipanema,” written by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. The song made Bossa Nova music popular worldwide.

In the 1970s, he devoted himself to working more with jazz, and along with Leny Andrade, traveled through the United States and Mexico, where he played along side such jazz greats as Sérgio Mendes, Gracinha Leporace, Osmar Milito, Manfredo Fest, Otávio Bailly, and Ronnie Mesquita.
He won over 60 awards in his career, including the Roquette Pinto trophy, the Chico Viola, and Imprensa trophy. In addition to music, he worked in television and films.
