| MANAUS, Brazil – Miner Roque Veigas, 45, who was lost in the Amazon jungle since early March, was found alive on Monday. He and another man were in the jungle researching gold mining areas near the municipality of Apuí (453 km from Manaus), on the border with Para state. He was missing for 37 days.

According to local press, the miner was found by his friend, a 70-year-old miner, who left the younger man in the jungle, to seek help. A medical team is on the way to where the man was located.
The drama began in the Amazon jungle after their boat overturned on the river Abacaxi, as the two were headed for gold mining areas deep in the rain forest. They fell into whitewater rapids, losing all their possessions, but surviving. They set out on foot in search of help, but the younger man became sick and was unable to continue.
The older man continued on his journey and eventually reached Transamazônica, where he received help from a family of farmers. The older miner was taken to Comunidade Sucundurím, in the interior of Apuí, where their journey began. After being treated, he returned to the jungle to rescue his friend but could not find the path to their rendezvous point.
The older miner returned to the forest several times to search for his friend but only today did he locate the trail and find his friend alive. “The place where the miner was lost is far from the urban area. It is unclear what the state of his health is or how he survived so many days lost in the jungle,” said Ivanir Valentim, a correspondent with TV Amazonas in Apuí.
