New Body Scanner Unveiled in Fortaleza

| FORTALEZA, Brazil – Federal Police unveiled on Tuesday (15) new equipment used to combat international drug trafficking at the Fortaleza airport. According to authorities, the body scanner detects any type of product hidden under clothing or inside the human body.

Passengers flying internationally or to certain regions in the north of the country – both departing and arriving – may be subjected to the scanner. The equipment costs U.S. $250 thousand dollars, but it was a gift from the U.S. Embassy in Brasília.

Pinto Martins International Airport in Fortaleza is a major transit point in the trafficking of cocaine being moved from North-West Brazil to the major cities on the East Coast and to Europe, Africa and the Middle East. In the fist quarter of this year, Federal Police in Ceará seized of 700 kg of cocaine.
