U.S. Issued 181,318 Visas So Far in 2012

| SAO PAULO – In just the first two months of the year, the U.S. Embassy in Brazil granted 181,318 visas to Brazilians. During January and February, 2012, the consulate in Sao Paulo alone issued an average of 2,236 nonimmigrant visas per day.

Woman with 9.5 kg Cocaine in Bra

| SAO PAULO – On Friday, the Federal Police (PF) at Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo arrested a woman carrying cocaine hidden in her bra. The PF say that the 34-year-old woman, born in the Republic of Guyana, was trying to board a flight to Entebbe, Uganda, when she was caught.

FORTALEZA, Brazil – (9 March 1942) American actor, director, writer and producer Orson Welles arrived in Fortaleza to commence filming It’s All True, a documentary film about South America. At the behest of the United States Government’s Good Neighbor Policy, a wartime propaganda effort designed to prevent Latin American countries from allying with the Axis powers, Welles came to Brazil with over one million U.S. dollars in his pocket.

Gaucha Selected 'Summer Girl 2012'

| PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil – On Saturday, 18-year-old gaucha Marceli Almeida was selected ‘Summer Girl 2012’ in the sands of Capão da Canoa, on the Rio Grando do Sul coast. “It was my dream and I followed through to accomplish it” said the student and model.

| SAO PAULO – Gas station surveillance cameras on Wednesday recorded the moment when a gunman shot a man who was sitting in his car at the pump. Police say the crime has all the hallmarks of a contract killing as nothing was stolen and a robbery was not announced.

Police Seize U.S. $600 Thousand in Cash

| CUIABA, Brazil – Police in southwestern Brazil seized an aircraft carrying weapons and U.S. $600 thousand dollars cash believed to be destined for Bolivia. The interdiction was made late Wednesday afternoon, near the town of Pocone, 104 km (65 mi) from the Mato Grosso state capital, Cuiaba.

Six hundred thousand U.S. dollars, guns, ammunition and satellite phones were seized from a small aircraft taking off from a farm in southwestern Brazil heading for Bolivia on Wednesday, 07 March 2012.

Takes Five Bullets to the Head & Lives

| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – On Monday, a 27-year-old man in southern Brazil was hit in the head with five lead bullets and survived. The incident occurred in the small town of Chapadao do Sul, 325 km (202 mi) from the Mato Grosso do Sul state capital, Campo Grande.

Idi Amin Dies in Brazil

| BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – The gorilla Idi Amin, 38, died Wednesday morning at the Zoo in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais state. The animal had undergone a clinical procedure, when he died at about 11 o’clock this morning. Veterinarians will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Idi Amin, a gorilla named after the infamous African dictator, died on Wednesday morning 06 March 2012, at the Belo Horizonte Zoo.

Woman Reunited with Mom After 62 Years

| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – On Friday, an 87-year-old woman was reunited with her 115-year-old mother after more than a half century apart. “I waited 62 years to see my mother. It was very emotional,” retiree Maria Rita Almeida, who traveled from Cuiaba, in Mato Grosso state told G1. The two had not seen each other since the daughter moved from Mato Grosso do Sul, to the neighboring state of Mato Grosso, soon after getting married in 1950.

Romanian Mule Arrested with Cocaine

| FORTALEZA, Brazil – A 23-year-old Romanian was caught red-handed on Saturday by Federal Police (PF) carrying cocaine at the international airport in Fortaleza. The man, who was about to board a flight to Lisbon, was carrying 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs) of pure cocaine hidden in his suitcase.
