Geographer Aziz Nacib Ab'Sáber Dies

| SAO PAULO - Aziz Nacib Ab'Sáber, University of Sao Paulo researcher and leading expert in the physical geography of Brazil, as well as a voice in discussions on biodiversity and environmental conservation, died on Friday morning at 10:20 am in Sao Paulo. He was 87 years old.

Google Street View Car Cruising Cuiaba

| CUIABA, Brazil – Residents of this Central-West state capital have noticed Google Street View cars mapping the city’s streets and avenues. Google is using special cameras mounted on motor vehicles to photograph cities around the world and, recently, the cities of Brazil. A “you reporter” photographed one of the cars parked on a city street and uploaded the image to G1.

Giant Anteater Surprise in Ladies Room

| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – A woman in Central-West Brazil received the fright of her life on Wednesday morning, when she encountered a giant anteater in a public restroom. The woman called 190 (911), which dispatched Military Police and animal control officers to catch the beast. The encounter occurred in the small town of São Bento de Sidrolândia, Mato Grosso do Sul state.

Supercomputer for University of Sao Paulo

| SAO PAULO - The University of Sao Paulo (USP) has acquired and will put into operation this month a supercomputer ranked among the fastest in the country. The equipment was purchased with support from the Foundation for Research Support of Sao Paulo (FAPESP) and has 2,304 processors.

 Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences , at the University of Sao Paulo is about to put into operation a new supercomputer which will operate at 20 teraflops.

Woman Settles 50-Year-Old Grocery Bill

| CURITIBA, Brazil – An 80-year-old retiree in southern Brazil has paid a debt she incurred with a grocery merchant over 50 years ago. The original debt was for ₢7,490 cruzeiros. The amount paid by the pensioner was R$150 reals (about $83 USD).

That fact was apparent on a recent trip we made to South Florida. The flights were all fully booked and Brazilians were carrying next to nothing as we flew north and, flying south, they were carting huge bags full of items purchased in Miami.

Fraudulent Docs Presented for U.S. Visa

| SAO PAULO – A 36-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday in front of the United States Consulate General in Sao Paulo for offering false documents during her visa interview. The woman was taken to the office of the Specialized Tourist Service Police (DEATUR).

Brazil Gives Out Half Billion Condoms

| BRASILIA – Brazil’s Health Ministry says it handed out almost 500 million free condoms last year. The program has helped Brazil successfully combat AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Brazil gave out almost one half billion free condoms in 2011, reports the health ministry.

Homeless Man Lives in Graveyard Tomb

| BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – A homeless man in Tres Pontas, in Southern Minas Gerais state, sleeps all day in a tomb in the city cemetery. Cristiano José da Silva, 61, who was a seminarian, says that he decided to leave home and live on the streets after his mother died.

Video: Quadruplet Pregnancies in Brazil

| SAO PAULO – Two women, one in Sao Carlos and another in Rio Claro, in the interior of Sao Paulo state, are confirmed pregnant with Quadruplets. The cases are considered rare in medicine, since neither of the women underwent fertility treatment.

In Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo state Brazil, Simone do Valle Camargo is 17 weeks into her first and rare quadruplet pregnancy.
