Actor Portraying Judas Hangs Himself

| SAO PAULO – During a theatrical presentation of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday night, actor Thiago Klimeck hanged himself accidentally. He was portraying the character of Judas Iscariot when he confused stage ropes with the prop rope intended for staging the scene from the Book of Matthew where Judas hangs himself.

Spaniard Busted with Cocaine in Parana

| CURITIBA, Brazil – Federal Police in Iguassu Falls arrested a 37-year-old Spaniard early on Thursday accusing him of international drug trafficking. The suspect tried to board a flight from the Foz do Iguaçu International Airport bound for Brasilia, DF.

Inmate Escapes Dressed as a Woman

| MACEIO, Brazil – An accused drug trafficker, in jail after being caught with 16 kg (35 lbs) of marijuana resin, walked out of jail dressed as a woman this week. Ronaldo da Silva, 39, tried to flee the county jail in the interior of Alagoas state in north-eastern Brazil but was quickly recaptured.

Military Police SWAT Team Raids Casino

| GOIANIA, Brazil – A Military Police SWAT Team in Goiania raided an illegal casino at a restaurant, seizing seven slot machines. The raid came after a viewer complaint to TV Anhanguera, which triggered the police action. According to the man, he is addicted to this type of game and had just lost about R$3,000 reals (about $1,650 USD) to the casino.

I was more than a little disappointed when they told me that they had just come from safari in Africa since I then assumed that they were traveling with their boyfriends.

Veterans Celebrate the '64 Revolution

| RIO DE JANEIRO – On Saturday morning, military reservists paid tribute to the military coup of 1964, which occurred 48 years ago. Four veterans of the Parachute Brigade jumped from an airplane, each with a flag of Brazil in tow, and landed on Reserve Beach in Recreio dos Bandeirantes in front of a kiosk frequented by military paratroopers.

Concert for Autism at Corcovado

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Workers on Monday hauled a 450 kg (992 lb) piano to the 710-meter (2,329 ft) peak of Corcovado mountain and placed it at the foot of the 38-meter (125 ft) tall statue of Jesus, known as Christ the Redeemer. The unprecedented move was to accommodate a late afternoon concert by pianist Alvaro Siviero, at one of the most famous tourist spots in the world.
