Man Repents After Buying Bogus Cash

| CURITIBA, Brazil – A man in southern Brazil walked into a police station and confessed that he bought R$80,000 reals ($43,000 USD) in counterfeit cash while visiting Paraguay. Merchant Oseias Bernardo said that he purchased the bogus notes on a whim, but came to regret his actions and decided to turn the money into police.

Brazil’s Open Air Metal Festival a Bust?

| SAO LUIS, Brazil – At least five metal bands, including Headhunter DC, Venom and Saxon have canceled their scheduled appearance at the Open Air Metal Festival in northern Brazil. The festival, which was to have kicked off this morning at 10:30 am local time, opened with a whimper: empty stage, no music, food, or beverages, reported various online media.

Car Crushed, Driver Escapes Unscathed

| SAO PAULO – The Ford Fiesta driven by Jamili Gobato Abou Adili, 26, was crushed after being hit by a bus on Tuesday, but the lucky woman walked away with minor injuries. The car was rendered an unrecognizable ball of crushed metal. “I didn’t think I would come out unscathed,” the woman told G1, but she escaped with only a cut on her forehead and a small bruise on her left hand.

Flooding Closes Highway to Venezuela

| BOA VISTA, Brazil – Heavy rain hit the northern state of Roraima on Wednesday, washing out sections of the road connecting Brazil and Venezuela. The washout occurred about 60 km (37 mi) from the state capital, Boa Vista, on the BR-174 North, completely closing the highway.

Libya Reaches out to Brazil

| BRASILIA – The deputy prime minister of Libya, Omar Abdelkarim, spoke on Tuesday with President Rousseff and American Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. Abdelkarim told them that the goal of the provisional government of Libya is to reconnect with the West, through political, economic and commercial partnerships. He said that Libyan authorities’ efforts are directed at “rebuilding the country.”

Shot in the Chest, Saved by Cellphone

| RIO DE JANEIRO – A doctor escaped near certain death on Wednesday when a bullet hit him in the chest but was deflected by a cell phone he was carrying in his shirt pocket. The doc was walking in the area of Plaza XV in downtown Rio, and was one of three victims shot after an argument over a woman on a city bus.

'Flying Car' Smashes into Home

| SAO PAULO – Police partially condemned a home in the Itaim Paulista neighborhood of metropolitan Sao Paulo on Sunday, after a flying car slammed into the second floor. The car became stuck in the wall and destroyed part of a bathroom and bedroom in the house.
