Imperial Era Dock Foundation Unearthed

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Mayor Eduardo Paes announced on Friday afternoon, the discovery of the foundation stone of the Dom Pedro II Dock, laid on September 15, 1871 by engineer André Rebouças. Rio's mayor posted a photo of the stone - which was found in the construction to revitalize the harbor area of the city - on Twitter.

The foundation stone for the Dom Pedro II Dock in Rio de Janeiro, laid on 15 September 1871, was unearthed on Friday 04 May 2012.

Pro-cannabis Mag 'semSemente' to Debut

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Today's debut edition of the first Brazilian magazine dedicated exclusively to marijuana had to be delayed after the printer backed out. The magazine “semSemente” was to have debuted at today's protest in favor of decriminalization of marijuana in Rio de Janeiro, reported Brazilian online media.

Hospital Patient Shot Dead in Bed

| FLORIANÓPOLIS, Brazil – Gunmen entered the largest hospital in Santa Catarina state on Friday afternoon and shot a patient nine times. The 25-year-old patient, who was in the hospital recovering from another shooting, died, reported Brazilian online media.

France's Honorary Consul found Dead

| FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil – Police in southern Brazil are investigating the death of the Honorary Consul of France, who was found dead in Santa Catarina state. Workers at a deluxe hotel in Joinville, 190 km from the state capital, Florianópolis, discovered the body of Francisco Julio Borghoff, 64, in a pool of blood, reported Brazilian online media on Friday.

Oscar Niemeyer Hospitalized in Rio

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Iconic Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, 104, was hospitalized on Wednesday at Samaritan Hospital, in Botafogo, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. According to a spokesman for the hospital, Niemeyer was admitted at about 7 pm and his prognosis is good.

'Jetman' Flies Around Rio de Janeiro

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Swiss aviator Yves Rossy, known as Jetman, flew around Rio de Janeiro today, 2 May 2012. He jumped from a helicopter high above the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado, activated his equipment, and used his body to fly around the statue and eventually land on Copacabana Beach in the city's South Zone.

Bribery Attempt Land Siblings in Jail

| SAO PAULO – A brother and sister team was arrested last Tuesday in the Portal do Morumbi region of Sao Paulo. The man was arrested for possession of cloned bank cards and the woman for trying to bribe police into releasing him.

Sao Paulo siblings try to bribe police with R$15,000 reals in cash but were arrested instead.

Iranian Diplomat Shot in Brasilia

| BRASILIA – An official of the Iranian Embassy in Brasilia was shot at around 10:45 pm last night in the capital. The Iranian, identified by police as a driver for the Iranian diplomatic mission, was approached by three assailants who tried to take the car he was driving. The driver didn't speak Portuguese, resisted and was shot.

Rare Urutau Bird Photographed Atop Pole

| CAMPO GRANDE, Brazil – An alert G1 reader in Central-West Brazil spotted a rare urutau bird, which is able to 'cloak' itself. Business manager Lucia Teixeira de Moraes, 53, of Parque Novos Estados in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul state, snapped a photo of the bird and uploaded it to G1.

Stolen Radioactive Device Located

| RIO DE JANEIRO – A tip made to the Civil Defense led to the recovery of the car containing a device containing radioactive selenium 75. The car and the device - which were stolen Saturday night - were both recovered, apparently intact, on Tuesday morning.

Civil Defense recovered a stolen Renault Logan which contained radioactive selenium 75 used in the inspection of welds.

Radioactive Material Stolen in Rio

| RIO DE JANEIRO – Police in Rio de Janeiro tonight are searching for a stolen car which contains a capsule of radioactive material. The car containing the material, which belongs to an industrial inspection and maintenance company, was stolen Saturday night in the northern suburbs of the city.

A device similar to this was in a car that was stolen on Saturday 18 April 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The device contains Selenium 75, a very dangerous radioactive material.
